ACCREDITATION AS “RECHTSANWALT” IN GERMANY 

Lawyers from EU or EEA Member States, or Switzerland, may sit 

the aptitude test to become directly accredited as a „Rechtsanwalt“ 

in Germany, in accordance with Section 16 of the German Law 

regulating the activity of European lawyers in Germany (EuRAG). 

With this qualification, they gain the same rights as German lawyers 

and are permitted to use the title both in Germany and in their 

native country. 

The key advantages of the dual qualification are: 

•  the improvement of career opportunities 

•  joining an international law firm in Germany 

•  joining an in‐house legal department of a German bank or of 

another German company 

•  establishing a law firm or making partner 

•  receiving new mandates more easily thanks to transnational 

consultation expertise

The intensive course was established in 1992 with the support of the 

European Commission.
